If you’re trying hard to come up with a great headline sometimes one of the worst things you can do is to keep trying hard to come up with a great headline. :-)

The reason I say that is because you get in a rut. So here is one of the best ways you can get out of a rut when writing headlines.

Write some outrageous headlines that make you laugh. Do about 5 – 10 of them before you go back to writing serious headlines. Here are some examples for an imaginary weight loss for mothers product.

“Mother Discovers Secret To A Super Model Body From An Alien”

“This Mother Has A KFC Secret That Helps Her To Have A Better Body After Kids”

“You Would Never Know This Mother Has Had 9 Kids….At One Time!”

“How Did This Mother Get Her Body To Look Better Than Her 17 Year Old Daughters?”

“This Mother Of 3 Has Been Stalked By Plastic Surgeons Trying To Discover Her Secret To An Amazing Body”

This headline writing tip is a great way to get some creativity back in your headline writing.

How To Get Attention With Your Website

Watch this video below to find out how you can get attention for your website.  It’s critical that you know this information otherwise your website will not stand out.  So watch this video now:

If you don’t get attention for what you’re doing then virtually nothing else matters.

But you can’t get attention by offering exactly what everyone else is offering.

Imagine going into the weight loss marketing and your product claims to help people lose weight.  Are you going to get attention with a message like that?  Of course you’re not.

What about going into the opportunity market with a message that says I’m going to help you make money.  Is that going to get you any attention?  Of course it’s not!

In any market you go into or are in you need something very different to capture attention.  Here is a great example of this.

Imagine you’re in the fast food business and you come out with a new burger.

Is that going to capture much attention?

Of course it’s not.

New burger….big deal.

But what about if you had a new burger that didn’t have any bread buns.

Now that’s different.

That’s what KFC did with it’s double down burger.

The chicken was the bun’s.

So that’s completely different right?

Did it get attention?

Yes, in a big way.

Here in New Zealand people were talking about this bunless burger coming and being released and then on the day it was released people were lining up out the door to get this new burger.

When did you last hear of that happening for a new burger release?

Now there’s some very smart other elements to this marketing.

1st. Here in New Zealand it had a launch date and there were stories on the news about it coming here.

2nd. It was only available for a limited time…so you’d better get in quick otherwise you’ll miss out.

3rd. It was not trying to be a healthy burger.

It was a bunless burger that had bacon and cheese and who knows what else in it.

So it not only went against convention by having the chicken as the buns it was not trying to be healthy.

You’ll notice every other fast food operation is trying to come up with healthy alternatives and KFC comes out with the Double down burger.

So here’s the big take away for your Internet business. :-)

If you want to get attention then come up with something that is totally the opposite to the accepted norm.

Here’s some examples of this.

If the accepted is that you eat 3 meals a day you come out with a weight loss product that advocates you eating 6 meals a day you’ll get attention.

If everyone says you should eat very little protein and fats you come out with a weight loss product were you tell peopled to basically eat all protein and fats and you’ll get attention.

You would probably recognize products that have used those types of elements in their weight loss marketing.  And I’ve picked on the weight loss market for good reason.  Because it’s probably one of the biggest, most competitive markets there is to make money in.

And everyone knows to lose weight you simply have to eat less and exercise more.

But is a message like that going to get you attention?

Of course it’s not.

But do you think there’s going to be some people producing products and systems in the weight loss market that will be huge sellers this year?

Of course they are.

Why?

Because they’ll have some different message to them.

So take a look at what you’re doing currently and if you want to get some big attention then brainstorm way’s that you can angle your marketing message in a completely contrary way to the accepted norm.

Do that and you’ll get attention and more sales.

Product Creation Templates

In my last post I gave you a simple way to get 26 + ideas for a new product.  After doing this you simply need to write a few paragraphs of meaty information for each of your points listed and to help you do this I want to share with you five content templates.

Each template consists of an opening sentence that you can apply to any of the ideas you have for your new product.  So I suggest you go through your list and plug them into these templates to get your new product off to a great start.

Content Template #1

If I could sum up ________________ in __________ steps, here is what they would be ______________”

Where you see the “blanks” you just complete the blanks with whatever ideas you have on your list.

For example: “If I could sum up doing business online in 3 steps, here is what they would be…”

I might choose…

Step 1:  Develop a product.
Step 2:  Build a website.
Step 3:  Promote.

So you begin a section by opening with the above provided sentence by completing the blank sections with whatever topic you plan on discussing in that section.

“If I could sum up losing weight and getting in shape in 4 steps, here is what they would be…”

“If I could sum up learning to play guitar in 3 steps, here is what they would be…”

“If I could sum up restoring antique vehicles in 5 steps, here is what they would be…”

Your opening sentence sets the stage for that section.  Just insert your own topic in the template and you’re ready to begin. Next, you write supporting paragraphs for each of the three steps, which can be as little as one paragraph, but should be preferably 3-4 paragraphs per step.

Content Template #2

“One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about ____________ is _____________…

For example: “One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about selling online is generating website traffic.”

Some other examples might include…

“One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about losing weight is staying motivated.”

“One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about playing guitar is memorizing where their fingers go for each chord.”

“One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about the game of golf is hitting long, straight drives.”

“One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about buying a new car is making certain they get the best price.”

After this sentance then spend 2-3 paragraphs describing the challenge itself. Then, suggest a solution.  Offer some advice on how to overcome the challenge.  Outline 4 or 5 tips for solving the problem.  Each tip only needs to be 1 paragraph in length, but it all adds up to a great deal of content.

Content Template #3

“A little known secret about _____________ is ______________”

Some variations on this theme include…

A seldom used tactic
An often misunderstood
An often overlooked
The best kept secret
One of the most powerful

An example might be: “A little known secret about buying a new car is understanding the sticker price.

“A little known secret about hiring a ghostwriter is NEVER accept the lowest bid.

“A little known secret about losing weight fast  is to eat smaller meals throughout the day

“A little known secret about successfully creating a budget is to allot money for entertainment

Content Template #4

“Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people fail in ___________ is _____________”

An example would be: “Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people fail in business online is a lack of training.”

“Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people fail in building a list is because they don’t have a good squeeze offer.”

“Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people fail at losing weight is a lack of discipline.”

“Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people fail at house breaking poodles is because of using the wrong approach.”

After exposing what is perhaps the biggest reason why people fail in achieving their desired outcome, give the reader several quick tips on how to avoid failure, specifically mentioning how to achieve success.

See how easy this is when you just have a starting point?

You could probably easily work in 4 or 5 tips about achieving success in a particular area.  You could probably weave in a short 3-5 step system for achieving success in a particular area.  You could probably pose and answer several questions relating to success in a particular area.

It’s all about having something to begin with, which is the purpose of our content templates here.

Content Template #5

“The one thing I always get asked about ______________ is _________________.”

An example might be: The one thing I always get asked about dieting is “can I lose weight fast”?

The one thing I always get asked about homeschooling is “will it hurt my child’s social skills”?

The one thing I always get asked about online dating is “is it safe”?

The one thing I always get asked about relieving headaches is “what can I do to avoid them altogether”?

Fire away your most asked question and then answer it.  Provide them with as many tips or steps in your answer as you can.

So, those are the five content templates you can use at anytime to help you flesh out any of your ideas into great content for your new products.

How To Brainstorm Things To Put In A Product

Here’s a great, fast way to brainstorm ideas on what to put in a new product.

To do this exercise simply start with the letter “A” in the alphabet, literally begin thinking of events, places, people, items, verbs, ideas, etc. that begin with that letter and are related to the topic of your new product.  Once you’ve done that for the letter A then do the same thing for the letter B.  You then simply need to keep doing that for every letter of the alphabet.

FOR EXAMPLE:  If you are writing a product related to getting a website up and running you might have….

A = Auto-responder, adwords, etc.

B = Business directories (online and offline),buzz marketing, etc.

C = Credit Cards, credibility, etc.

D = Directories (server), downloads, etc.

E = Email, eLance, etc.

F = FTP, folders, etc.

So do that brainstorming exercise and you’ll have loads of ideas on what to put in your new product.

What To Include In Your New Product

If you’ve picked a market and you have an idea for a new product you then need to come up with some good ideas on what to include in your new product.  The easiest way that I’ve discovered for doing this is to simply…

Write a list of everything you want to share in your new product.

That’s right, just write down everything you want to share in your product.  I mean just start rambling on paper (or your computer).  Everything you can think of that relates to the subject of your product.  Just a list of “ideas” you want to share.

Don’t worry about relevance or whether or not you’ll even use all of these ideas.  Just get them down.

Jot down as many of these as you can…

  • Ideas
  • Notes
  • Lists
  • Questions
  • Reminders
  • Personal reflections
  • Thoughts
  • Things-To-Do
  • Checklists
  • Details
  • Steps
  • Facts
  • Reasons
  • Comparisons
  • Contrasts
  • Statistics
  • Quotes
  • Illustrations / Stories

Don’t worry about whether or not your ideas make sense.  Don’t worry about how well your ideas are written.  Don’t worry if your ideas fit with anything else.  Just write down everything you can possibly think of concerning the topic of your product that you think you might like to include.

By doing this it will get your new product off to a great start.  And it’s starting that many people seem to have the hardest time with when it comes to creating a new product.

How To Choose A Winning Product Title

When you’re creating a new product you need an interesting title for your product.  And more specifically you want your title to be memorable, short and clearly identifiable to whom it is aimed at.  I’m going to help you come up with such a title and to start with take a look at these good titles used for books:

Just recently I was in a library when a book title stood out to me.  Here it is:

How To Quit Without Feeling S**T

Love it. :-)

So that’s some templates you can use to get started.  Now get a scrap piece of paper and brainstorm some ideas so you have between 50-100 titles.  Then whittle what you’ve got down to at least 3 good titles.

Now here is some further advice to help you decide on the final title for your product:

  • Does the title “Accurately represent” the product? In other words, does your title mention “specifically” what your product is going to focus on?

For example, “How To Vacation” isn’t specific. “How to Plan a Vacation” is still too vague. “How to Plan A Vacation in 3 Easy Steps” is getting better.

  • Does the title “Build interest”? That is, is your product title “appealing“, even “enticing“?

Your title should, in itself, begin to create a desire to purchase the product. “How to Plan a Vacation in 3 Easy Steps” isn’t nearly as appealing as “How to Plan a Fun-Filled, Budget-Friendly Vacation in 3 Easy Steps”. Of course, that title isn’t nearly as intriguing as “How to Take The Vacation Of Your Dreams Without Spending A Penny!”

  • Does the title “Communicate benefits”? That is, when someone reads the title of your product, do they have a reasonable expectation of some desirable results they can achieve by purchasing, reading and applying your product?

Products that scream ULTIMATE BENEFIT are the most appealing, simply because we are emotional creatures.  We want something that is going to deliver the desired results we are after.  And if a product title communicates that it can deliver those results, we will definitely take a closer look.”Earn Income On The Web” doesn’t offer nearly the benefit punch that “Get Web Profits Fast!” does.  Note the difference:  One says “income,” the other says “profits.”  We want money we can spend.  One says “Earn” and the other says “Get.”  Earn seems like much more work that getting something.  And one doesn’t promise when, the other says “Fast!” See the difference?

So use these tips to create your next product title and reap the benefits!

The Biggest Reason People Won’t Succeed Online

One of the biggest reasons a person won’t succeed online is because of the wrong expectations. Most people looking to make money online want to make $10,000 by next weekend. The successful offline business owner understands that it takes time to build a real Internet business.

Terry hates business opportunities because they give people the wrong expectations and set them up for failure.

People give us money because of the value we put in their lives. We need to create products and systems that help people to reach their goals and solve their problems and do it by using leverage and team members.

An offline business owner knows that online success is about building systems that deliver the value, NOT about business opportunities.

A person who has never owned a business before thinks that if they work 40 hours per week then they should be paid for those 40 hours. They have an employee mentality.

The Internet doesn’t work like that at all. It doesn’t matter how much you work, it is all about how much value you provide to people.

You can give a successful business owner a plan to succeed online and they’ll follow it. Whereas a person who has never owned a business will have a plan and then they’ll see the latest product launch and ask Terry if they should get the product.

The successful offline business owner understands that you have a plan and you work the plan. You don’t get distracted from it. They know how to focus on the plan and keep working it from personal experience.

The Plan Terry Would Give A Successful Offline Business Owner Wanting To Come Online

Here’s the plan that Terry would give a successful business owner if they want to come online.

1. See what they’ve done in the past and succeeded with.
2. Put together a product for the market or area they have succeeded with in the past. This will be a particular subject rather than an encyclopedia type of product.
3. Build two websites. One to focus on selling the product. The second one is a blog to get traffic and leads.
4. Then start contacting potential JV partners with their product.

How To Stop Information Overload

You need a proven plan to follow and in this plan you need to know how you are going to generate traffic. People get so overwhelmed by this because there’s so many possible ways to do it.
What Terry has found is that the successful people online become specialists with specific types of traffic, e.g. PPC, SEO, JV’s/Affiliates etc. The really successful people online have one or two core ways that they generate huge amounts of traffic.

Outsourcing

Offline business owners understand very quickly that they need to outsource to get things done, like getting a website designed.

Whereas a lot of other people coming online think they need to do it all themselves, e.g. setup a website, do the customer service etc., etc and that becomes very overwhelming fast.

Very few offline business owners do it all themselves so they are used to outsourcing and hiring people, and they bring that same mentality online.

But it’s not about how much money you have, it’s about the mental characteristics. However, having money is an advantage because you’re not going to be desperate ato make income by this weekend.

But with Terry’s plan it doesn’t cost you a lot because you’re going after JV partners, first and that’s a time investment rather than a money one.

So it’s not about how much money you have to start, with but rather it’s about your mentality.

Confidence In The System

VERY IMPORTANT: An offline business owner has much more confidence that they can get the system, to work. That confidence comes back to the system which is…

• They make a plan
• They start following the plan
• They confidently keep carrying on with the plan even if they don’t see the results right away

Whereas someone who has never had that experience before and they don’t get results the first weekend, they’ll immediately jump ship after the first weekend and try something else.

But the way to have confidence and go after JV traffic from the beginning is to use a proven sales formula that Terry calls the 3 p’s, which are:

  • Problem
  • Promise
  • Proof

The product itself must solve a major problem that people are already spending money on. And it needs to give some type of unique promise to show that it’s different from the other things in the market. Finally, it needs to have some proof to back up that promise.

If you can do that then you can have a pretty good converting product right out of the gate. After setting that up you can then go to potential partners and say…

“People are having this problem and we have this unique promise, which is this, and here’s our proof to back it up.”

Terry doesn’t advise going after the biggest partners in the very beginning but rather start off with smaller partners and test.

What If You Only Make 1 – 2 Sales In The First Week?

Is The Glass Half Full Or Half Empty?

The glass is either half full or half empty.

If an opportunity seeker gets 1-2 sales in the first week they will say something like “I did all of this work and only got two sales!”  Whereas the offline business owners will say “It’s only our first week and we’ve already made two sales!”

The offline business owner will, from past experience, know that it takes 1-2 years to make money in a business offline, and then after a week online they’ll say…. “we have just made money in the first week!”

It’s a different mentality.

Most offline businesses do not generate a net profit in the first year. That’s a fact of offline business.

So when an offline business owner sees a small amount of profits come in quickly, that’s better than starting an offline business.

Most people do not want to hear that it’s about building a real business.  Most people want the push button system where you push a button and money comes out. But those don’t exist.

People don’t want a business….all they want is the income. They want the success without the work.

The Fundamentals For A Successful Internet Business

You need a business plan written down that includes…

1. A consistent way to generate traffic
2. A consistent way to turn that traffic into sales

The most important out of these two is conversion, because if you have a high enough conversion then people will end up promoting it so you won’t have to worry about traffic.

Conversion

You need to focus on turning the visitors into customers and then look at building relationship with those customers so you can then sell them more to build up the customer lifetime value.

In general if you have a $50 – $100 product you can send them to a sales letter type of page. But if the product is over $100 then you should send them to a name squeeze page and then try to make the sale after getting the email address.

If you’re not strong on conversion that’s where you have to get a copywriter to help you. And that’s not going to be cheap. You’re generally talking about $2000 or more for a decent copywriter. That’s not even the best. If you’re looking at the best then you’re looking at $10,000 or more.

It costs a lot to have someone help you with conversion, but it’s worth it.

What To Do If You Have No Sales Skills

If you have no sales skills and no money the best thing you can do is start up your own website and sell other people’s stuff. When you do that you’ll learn how to sell and eventually you can create your own products and sell them to your own email list.

Why Do People Fail Online Even With A Good Product

Some of the mental reasons people fail online are (apart from the wrong expectations)….

They don’t get the right offer right out of the gate…the exact right direction from the very beginning, which is why you should test.  A beginner doesn’t seem to get that. They think that if you know what you’re doing you should always succeed.

Even Terry can’t get it right first time, and so here’s the important things with conversion that you need to focus on:

1. The audience – what it is they want to buy.
2. The offer – whether it stands out to them and whether it’s something they want.
3. The Ad Copy – the words you use to sell it.

The importance is in that order with the audience being the most important.

If you don’t target the audience correctly then the offer is not going to work. Then if you don’t target the offer correctly, it’s not going to work.

People who fail online don’t see that maybe they need to change who they are targeting. That they need to overcome the hurdle of finding the right people.

Before you start you need to do your research. You need to look at the main competitors. Print out their websites.

Look for PPC advertisers, because they are spending money and you then want to see how they convert it into sales.

Look at amazon.com. Look on twitter using tweetdeck. Look on Youtube.

Look to see what people are doing, saying and buying (i.e. on amazon).

People don’t accomplish their goals often because they don’t do their research enough.

Why Do Research?

• To create something that is unique to the competition, and
• To create something that customers are used to buying

A big failure when it comes to a market is selling what people need, not what people want to buy.

It doesn’t matter what you think people need, it only matters what they think they need and what they want to buy.

Competition

You should never be afraid of competition. You should be afraid if there isn’t any competition. If there’s a market with no or very little  competition, then that probably means that people have found that you can’t make money in that market.

If you’re waiting to get in the Internet marketing game by finding a market with no competition your chances of doing that are slim to none nowadays.

In this Internet marketing field we often talk about testing, but very few people actually do it.

The main reason comes down to the speed of implementation. Most people take a long time to run a test, whereas the super successful people implement tests very quickly.

The people who make a massive jump have someone that can change their website quickly. If you’re waiting on an outside website designer to make a small change on your website then you might be waiting two weeks to get it done.

Don’t Make This Website Mistake

The other day my wife was on the computer reading something and I happened to look at the screen.  Here is an example of what I saw:

I asked my wife what she was reading and she said “shhhh, I’ll lose my place”.

It’s sad that a person went to quite great lengths of writing something and then they didn’t format it for the visitor.

Do not make that mistake on your website!

When you produce any written work on the Internet it should be in chunks of about 4-5 lines.

This is for readability.

Look, reading online is harder than reading a book so we need to make it as easy as possible for people to read what we’re writing.  And you do that by having short paragraphs.  So remember, use the 4-5 line per paragraph as a general rule.  Also throw in some one liners to mix things up.
