Two Ways To Create A Unique Product

One of the easiest ways to create a product that is unique is to aim it at a specific demographic group and here’s a couple of simple ways to do this…

1. By Experience or Skill Level.

Focus your product based on the experience level of others.  In other words, your product is specifically for “beginners” or specifically for “advanced users”.  Your product is specifically for those who’ve achieved or not achieved a certain level of advancement.  Let me give you a few examples to help explain…

Example 1:  If you’re creating a product about “karate”, it can be specifically targeted for “3rd degree black belts”, for example.  That’s what makes you different … while others might offer resources for ALL students of karate, yours is exclusively for those who’ve reached a certain level of experience.

Example 2:  If you’re creating a product about “golf”, you could focus it specifically on those with a handicap less than 5, which is the level of skill that I’m at.  I’d be much more likely to buy something related to my skill level than a product for beginners.

Example 3:  If you’re creating a product about “parenting”, then you might position it specifically for “first-time” parents.  Or parenting boys or parenting girls, or a specific age group etc. Again, that makes you different.

So, that’s one way of distinguishing yourself by targeting specific demographic groups based on “experience and skill levels”.

Here’s the 2nd way…

2. By Distinction.

Focus on some “adjective” that describes a group of people.  Again, here are some classic examples:

Example 1:  If you’re creating a product about “fundraising”, then you could target it towards “church groups” or “school groups” or “civic groups” or any other distinctive group of people who are interested in raising funds.

Example 2:  If you’re creating a product about “selling on Ebay”, you could focus it on “baseball card collectors”, “antique dealers”, “wholesalers” or any other distinctive group of people who might sell items at the online auction giant’s website.

Example 3:  If you’re writing a product about “saving your marriage” you could focus it specifically on “wives” or “husbands” or “empty nesters” etc.

The idea is to find a distinctive group of people and target them with your product.  While most of your competition is catering to the masses, you’ve separated yourself by going after a slightly smaller demographic among the general audience.

So, that’s how you can position your product in order to make it more desirable to your potential customers and create an advantage over your competition.

To help you do this you need to answer these two questions:

1. What does my product offer that no one else does?

2. Who would my product be just perfect for?

Obviously the best option would be to position your product/service in both ways; by focusing on a specific benefit AND a specific group.

How To Find Your Product Uniqueness For Your Sales Letter

When you’re selling your products or services you need to focus on specific benefits that make your product or service special and unique.  To help you determine this here are 20 questions you can answer about your product or service to come up with the unique selling points that set it apart…

1. Is it the only product or service available on the topic?

2. Does your product or service have more ideas than any other product or service?

3. Have you broken things down into the easiest-to-follow steps?

4. Does it include something that’s missing from others?

5. Is it written in a more “user-friendly” language?

6. Does it include significantly helpful screenshots?

7. Do you reveal some little known fact or secret strategy?

8. Have you produced some staggering results?

9. Is it a completely different approach to the subject?

10. Does it contain the latest information or updated ideas?

11. Does it disclose something that’s “top secret” to most people?

12. Is it the most complete product available on the topic?

13. Does it explain things in greater detail?

14. Is it full of ways to apply existing information?

15. Does it have brainstorming exercises?

16. Does it include things like forms and worksheets?

17. Is it specifically for “advanced users”?

18. Does it expand upon an existing concept?

19. Does it offer an easier or faster way to accomplish a task?

20. Does it offer a different solution to a common problem?

I’ve just given you 20 different ways that your product or service can be “positioned” in a unique way.  Surely there is something among the 20 questions that I’ve just asked to which you can respond with an emphatic “yes”!

I need you to understand that, you’ve got something in your product that no one else has, and that’s what you need to determine.   But if you don’t have that then you need to come up with something and add it to your product or service.

This uniquness is the driving force for your product and sales letter.  It’s all inter-linked.

Ebook Formatting Outline

ebook pdfHere is the general format you should use when creating an eBook:

1st. eBook Title page.

This typically will include the title of your product, any subtitle, your name as author and possibly your website address, contact information and any graphics you might want to include.

2nd. Legal page.

This necessary page of your eBook would include copyright information, disclaimers, terms of usage and any extra special disclosures or instructions you might have.

3rd. Author page.

In your eBook you should include a page about yourself for a couple of solid reasons. It allows your readers to identify with you, thus establishing a “trust” relationship plus it allows you to inform the reader of other resources you may offer such as your newsletter, web site, etc.

4th.  Special Offer page.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make in creating an eBook is NOT including a “special offer” page.   You should always make certain you devote a separate page – up front after your author page – to making some kind of special offer to the reader.  Three of my favorite ways to use this “special offer” page are…

- DISCOUNT on a related offer.

I would mention a product or service or additional product, directly related to the material in the product the reader is currently viewing.  Specifically, I would offer a one-time discount for this additional purchase since they had already made a purchase.

- DEAL for a related offer.

I would mention some free incentive that I’ll give them as an extra bonus should they purchase an additional featured product or service related to the content of the eBook they are viewing.  This broadens my possibilities in that I can not only mention an offer of my own, but can also promote an affiliate program if I want to do so.

- DEADLINE for a related offer.

I would mention a product or service that has a deadline or some kind of limit imposed upon it to create a sense of urgency for the reader to buy.  Again, this additional “special offer” would be related to information contained in the eBook the reader is currently viewing.  This time, the additional offer would be available “only for the first 25 who buy” or “only for 72 hours after your original purchase date” or some other similar restriction.

5th. Table of contents.

Your eBook should have distinct chapter sections, so it needs to have a table of contents.

6th.  Solution.

Next comes the content itself.  Your eBook content must walk the reader through getting a solution to their problem.  It shouldn’t only do this but it must appear as though it will.  Here’s the reason why I said “appear”.  Sadly, most people who buy an information product never use the information.  Almost all will look at it though, and they’ll have every intention in using it  -but sadly most won’t.  So your eBook needs to look good.  You can hire out this aspect to outsourcers.  You could go to a place like eLance.com and post a job to flash up a document to be a PDF.  Or you can do it yourself if you know how.  After your featured information, there is one final element to the “contents” of your eBook…

7th. Backend page.

There should always be some kind of “backend” offer at the conclusion of your eBook.  This can be something as blatant as a full-blown advertisement for a high-ticket product or something as subtle as a brief listing of your other products or affiliate products available for purchase.  If you don’t have any just find some affiliate offers you can promote.

Product Creation Templates

In my last post I gave you a simple way to get 26 + ideas for a new product.  After doing this you simply need to write a few paragraphs of meaty information for each of your points listed and to help you do this I want to share with you five content templates.

Each template consists of an opening sentence that you can apply to any of the ideas you have for your new product.  So I suggest you go through your list and plug them into these templates to get your new product off to a great start.

Content Template #1

If I could sum up ________________ in __________ steps, here is what they would be ______________”

Where you see the “blanks” you just complete the blanks with whatever ideas you have on your list.

For example: “If I could sum up doing business online in 3 steps, here is what they would be…”

I might choose…

Step 1:  Develop a product.
Step 2:  Build a website.
Step 3:  Promote.

So you begin a section by opening with the above provided sentence by completing the blank sections with whatever topic you plan on discussing in that section.

“If I could sum up losing weight and getting in shape in 4 steps, here is what they would be…”

“If I could sum up learning to play guitar in 3 steps, here is what they would be…”

“If I could sum up restoring antique vehicles in 5 steps, here is what they would be…”

Your opening sentence sets the stage for that section.  Just insert your own topic in the template and you’re ready to begin. Next, you write supporting paragraphs for each of the three steps, which can be as little as one paragraph, but should be preferably 3-4 paragraphs per step.

Content Template #2

“One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about ____________ is _____________…

For example: “One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about selling online is generating website traffic.”

Some other examples might include…

“One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about losing weight is staying motivated.”

“One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about playing guitar is memorizing where their fingers go for each chord.”

“One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about the game of golf is hitting long, straight drives.”

“One of the things that the majority of people find most challenging about buying a new car is making certain they get the best price.”

After this sentance then spend 2-3 paragraphs describing the challenge itself. Then, suggest a solution.  Offer some advice on how to overcome the challenge.  Outline 4 or 5 tips for solving the problem.  Each tip only needs to be 1 paragraph in length, but it all adds up to a great deal of content.

Content Template #3

“A little known secret about _____________ is ______________”

Some variations on this theme include…

A seldom used tactic
An often misunderstood
An often overlooked
The best kept secret
One of the most powerful

An example might be: “A little known secret about buying a new car is understanding the sticker price.

“A little known secret about hiring a ghostwriter is NEVER accept the lowest bid.

“A little known secret about losing weight fast  is to eat smaller meals throughout the day

“A little known secret about successfully creating a budget is to allot money for entertainment

Content Template #4

“Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people fail in ___________ is _____________”

An example would be: “Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people fail in business online is a lack of training.”

“Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people fail in building a list is because they don’t have a good squeeze offer.”

“Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people fail at losing weight is a lack of discipline.”

“Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people fail at house breaking poodles is because of using the wrong approach.”

After exposing what is perhaps the biggest reason why people fail in achieving their desired outcome, give the reader several quick tips on how to avoid failure, specifically mentioning how to achieve success.

See how easy this is when you just have a starting point?

You could probably easily work in 4 or 5 tips about achieving success in a particular area.  You could probably weave in a short 3-5 step system for achieving success in a particular area.  You could probably pose and answer several questions relating to success in a particular area.

It’s all about having something to begin with, which is the purpose of our content templates here.

Content Template #5

“The one thing I always get asked about ______________ is _________________.”

An example might be: The one thing I always get asked about dieting is “can I lose weight fast”?

The one thing I always get asked about homeschooling is “will it hurt my child’s social skills”?

The one thing I always get asked about online dating is “is it safe”?

The one thing I always get asked about relieving headaches is “what can I do to avoid them altogether”?

Fire away your most asked question and then answer it.  Provide them with as many tips or steps in your answer as you can.

So, those are the five content templates you can use at anytime to help you flesh out any of your ideas into great content for your new products.

How To Brainstorm Things To Put In A Product

Here’s a great, fast way to brainstorm ideas on what to put in a new product.

To do this exercise simply start with the letter “A” in the alphabet, literally begin thinking of events, places, people, items, verbs, ideas, etc. that begin with that letter and are related to the topic of your new product.  Once you’ve done that for the letter A then do the same thing for the letter B.  You then simply need to keep doing that for every letter of the alphabet.

FOR EXAMPLE:  If you are writing a product related to getting a website up and running you might have….

A = Auto-responder, adwords, etc.

B = Business directories (online and offline),buzz marketing, etc.

C = Credit Cards, credibility, etc.

D = Directories (server), downloads, etc.

E = Email, eLance, etc.

F = FTP, folders, etc.

So do that brainstorming exercise and you’ll have loads of ideas on what to put in your new product.

What To Include In Your New Product

If you’ve picked a market and you have an idea for a new product you then need to come up with some good ideas on what to include in your new product.  The easiest way that I’ve discovered for doing this is to simply…

Write a list of everything you want to share in your new product.

That’s right, just write down everything you want to share in your product.  I mean just start rambling on paper (or your computer).  Everything you can think of that relates to the subject of your product.  Just a list of “ideas” you want to share.

Don’t worry about relevance or whether or not you’ll even use all of these ideas.  Just get them down.

Jot down as many of these as you can…

  • Ideas
  • Notes
  • Lists
  • Questions
  • Reminders
  • Personal reflections
  • Thoughts
  • Things-To-Do
  • Checklists
  • Details
  • Steps
  • Facts
  • Reasons
  • Comparisons
  • Contrasts
  • Statistics
  • Quotes
  • Illustrations / Stories

Don’t worry about whether or not your ideas make sense.  Don’t worry about how well your ideas are written.  Don’t worry if your ideas fit with anything else.  Just write down everything you can possibly think of concerning the topic of your product that you think you might like to include.

By doing this it will get your new product off to a great start.  And it’s starting that many people seem to have the hardest time with when it comes to creating a new product.

How To Choose A Winning Product Title

When you’re creating a new product you need an interesting title for your product.  And more specifically you want your title to be memorable, short and clearly identifiable to whom it is aimed at.  I’m going to help you come up with such a title and to start with take a look at these good titles used for books:

Good To GreatThe Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make A Big Difference

Good To Great: Why Some Companies Make The Leap…and Other’s Don’t

Getting Things Done: The Art Of Stress-Free Productivity

The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9 – 5, Live Anywhere, And Join The New Rich

The One Minute Manager: A Classic!  Whether You Manage A Home, A Business, A Family, Or A Life…It Works

There are some common elements in a successful title.  The first is that they are short.  The second is that they often make a promise.  The final thing is they normally have a subtitle.

Before I get you to brainstorm ideas I want to give you five template ideas for naming a product.

1)   The

The Diet Solution

The Debt Recovery Plan

The Money Making Formula

2)    Made Easy

Weight Loss Made Easy

Maths Made Easy

Internet Marketing Made Easy

3)   How To

How To Make Money Online

How To Lose 10 Pounds

How To Date A Supermodel

4)   From This To That

Fat To Thin

Broke To Rich

Sad To Happy

5)   Number Of Days

21 Days To Stop Smoking For Life

7 Days To Make $1000 Online

14 Days To Have Your Own Website

Just recently I was in a library when a book title stood out to me.  Here it is:

How To Quit Without Feeling S**T

Love it. :-)

So that’s some templates you can use to get started.  Now get a scrap piece of paper and brainstorm some ideas so you have between 50-100 titles.  Then whittle what you’ve got down to at least 3 good titles.

Now here is some further advice to help you decide on the final title for your product:

  • Does the title “Accurately represent” the product? In other words, does your title mention “specifically” what your product is going to focus on?

For example, “How To Vacation” isn’t specific. “How to Plan a Vacation” is still too vague. “How to Plan A Vacation in 3 Easy Steps” is getting better.

  • Does the title “Build interest”? That is, is your product title “appealing“, even “enticing“?

Your title should, in itself, begin to create a desire to purchase the product. “How to Plan a Vacation in 3 Easy Steps” isn’t nearly as appealing as “How to Plan a Fun-Filled, Budget-Friendly Vacation in 3 Easy Steps”. Of course, that title isn’t nearly as intriguing as “How to Take The Vacation Of Your Dreams Without Spending A Penny!”

  • Does the title “Communicate benefits”? That is, when someone reads the title of your product, do they have a reasonable expectation of some desirable results they can achieve by purchasing, reading and applying your product?

Products that scream ULTIMATE BENEFIT are the most appealing, simply because we are emotional creatures.  We want something that is going to deliver the desired results we are after.  And if a product title communicates that it can deliver those results, we will definitely take a closer look.”Earn Income On The Web” doesn’t offer nearly the benefit punch that “Get Web Profits Fast!” does.  Note the difference:  One says “income,” the other says “profits.”  We want money we can spend.  One says “Earn” and the other says “Get.”  Earn seems like much more work that getting something.  And one doesn’t promise when, the other says “Fast!” See the difference?

So use these tips to create your next product title and reap the benefits!

Do This Before Creating Any Product

Before you create any product you must have/create a profile of your ideal customer.   When you do this here is the information you need to know…

customer profileMarket:

Prospect Age Range:

Predominant Sex:

Education Level:

Income Level:

Business Type:

Residence style/size:

Marital Status:

Children:

What is your ideal prospect’s biggest desire?:

What is your ideal prospect’s biggest problem?:

What is your idea prospect’s greatest anxieties and frustrations?:

What are your ideal prospect’s greatest perceived wants and needs?:

What is your ideal prospect losing out on because of their biggest problem?:

What will happen if they don’t find the solution to their problem?:

After you have completed these questions for your market you then need to actually give your ideal prospect a personality and name.  You need to feel as though you connect with this person you are targeting.  So do that customer profile and then create a product for that person along with your marketing materials.  You will have a much higher chance of success if you do that.

7 Product Creation Models

When you’re going to create a new product you have a number of different options in terms of layout.  To help you decide which one is best for your current project here’s a list of 7 of the product creation models you can use.

1. How-To Tutorial

This list begins with the classic “how-to” tutorial.  This style of product is organized in a systematic, step-by-step approach to accomplishing a task.  The steps are most commonly organized in chronological order.  (I.E.  Step One is…, Step Two is…, etc.).  These are generally known as “systems”, “formulas”, “checklists” or “blueprints”.

A few examples include –

1)   How to Design a Web Page in 5 Easy Steps

2)   How to Lose 12 Pounds in 12 Days

3)   How to Meet The Woman Of Your Dreams In A Week

Everyone wants to learn how to do something.  That’s why this type of product is so popular and it’s normally the best place to start when creating any new product.

Interview2. Interview

People have created full and very high priced products that have consisted of nothing more than interviews with prominent people.

Reasons why experts would do this for you include:  free publicity for their website or business, rights to the completed report/interview or paid compensation.

This is also a very good way to get in with some big players in your industry. So even if this isn’t the main aspect of your new product it should probably make up some component of it.

3. Shortcuts

Who among us wouldn’t like to take shortcuts (assuming they don’t have drawbacks) to achieve a desired result faster, easier or better?  The short answer is:  no one.  With this kind of product you would focus on ways to save time or effort in accomplishing a specific task without sacrificing any benefits or quality.

Some examples are:

  • 17 Money-Saving Shortcuts For Buying A New Home
  • 10 Shortcuts To Mastering Your Golf Game
  • 7 Shortcuts For Planning The Perfect Wedding

4. Time Frame

With this kind of product you would focus most of your “positioning” on the TIME FRAME in which the task can be completed.  Everything would be structured towards seeing results within a specific period of time; that would be the selling point.  More important than getting results is knowing how long it’s going to take to get those results (assuming it’s not long! :-)).

Some examples are:

  • How To Make Money Online In 10 Days Or Less
  • The 7-Day Weight Loss Plan
  • How To Sell Your House In 2 Weeks Or Less

5. Planner

This type of product is very, very structured.  It has daily “to do” tasks to help people to reach a goal.

Some of my most popular products have been “planners”.  For our purposes, a “planner” is simply a set of activities arranged in a daily schedule as a sort of checklist to work through. Why do people love them?  Because it allows them to stay on track.  They see a set of action steps to complete for Monday, then Tuesday, then Wednesday and so forth. Most people find it much easier to actually do something when it’s arranged in this kind of order.

Some examples are:

  • 21 Days To Fix A Slice
  • The 4-Week Wedding Planner And Organizer
  • 27 Days To Internet Marketing Success

6. Faster And Easier

Another kind of product is what I’ve labeled “faster and easier”.  The idea here is to position your product as a resource that reveals information to enable the reader to accomplish some task faster and/or easier than they were previously able to do so .

Some examples are:

  • 7 Ways To Pay Off Your Mortgage 10 Years Faster
  • How To Lose Weight Faster Than Recommended – Safely
  • The Easiest Way To Get Traffic To Your Web Site

7. Barriers And Mistakes

With virtually any pursuit in life there are potential pitfalls and common blunders associated with that pursuit.  The old adage is, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and there is some truth to that.  A properly positioned product highlighting barriers and mistakes (and how to avoid them!) would be another great option for you to consider.

Some examples are:

  • 7 Common Mistakes Homebuyers Make … And How To Avoid Them
  • The 7 Hidden Barriers To Weight Loss No One Told You About
  • 9 Stupid Things People Do When Trying To Fix Their Finances

So that’s seven different types of products you can create.  You just need to pick one and create it.  However, I firmly believe that you need to write your sales letter at the same time as creating a product because they should both be intertwined.

Get A New Product Fast

Here’s one of the quickest way to a new product.  It’s simply to record yourself talking about the subject you want to talk about.  So your product will be a mp3 recording that people can play on their iPods or whatever.

If you’re good at speaking then this is a very easy way to create a product fast.  To further add value to your audio product you can get the audio’s transcribed and made into a PDF.  Not essential but it will add value to your product.

If you want an audio product but you don’t want to do the speaking then no problem…just create your script and outsource the speaking job to a professional.

You see, there really is no excuse these days when it comes to creating a product.  It’s very easy.
